I'm not so much interested in how this happened as how to eliminate the extraneous libraries. After opening all the similar libraries in Photos I verified they all had the same images & even the same file sizes (according to the "Pictures" folder in Finder). I had five iPhoto Libraries and after converting them to Photos I discovered that I have two copies of one library and three of two others. After reading all the official Apple "How To" articles on the conversion and reading maybe dozens of posts on the subject I finally took the plunge and surprisingly everything went OK - I thought. Multiple Copies of "Photos" Libraries Created When Converting From "iPhoto" I had put off converting fronm iPhoto to Photos until just a few months ago. Note, that I did not change the library contents, I only viewed the images, and I was very careful to copy the image out of the library, not move it. The upshot is that it is not impossible to get to images in the library, even if you don't have Photos available, but I don't want to do it again! Zero did not have the file I wanted, so I worked through folders one, two, three.I think I finally found it in four. It might have been marginally easier with the newer finder that opens a larger preview. It was a simple matter to open each file from Sept - Dec in the various years and see if it was the one I wanted. I started at folder zero, and organized the finder window by date. Photos organizes the images by the first digit - zero through nine - in the odd filename it assigns. In this case, it did not matter if Photos did not rename the images, since I did not know the name of the photo anyway. From there it was pretty obvious that what I wanted was in the originals folder. I could easily control-click on the library to "open package contents". I knew the time of year - it was a picture of fall foliage - but not the year, so I decided to go spelunking. I wanted to enter a photo in a contest TheOnlinePhotographer was having. I currently am using a MBA with Big Sur, so its Photos can't directly open my backup Photos Library I have with me. I am in the process of moving so my 24" iMac with Photos is not available.
